Chemistry Homework: 6/17/13

Page 7:
  1.  Water pollution is more critical because not only does it disable people from drinking fresh and clean water, but individuals can easily get sick from drinking polluted water and even die as a result.

ISAS pages 23-24:
  1. Although Jimmy Hendricks did not use direct sources of water, he still used indirect sources to make the container of juice, to process the juice, and to irrigate the trees. Thus, although the water was not directly measured, hidden uses of water were still used.
  2. Three indirect sources of water associated with producing a loaf of bread include the water used to grow the wheat, the water for cows which eventually creates butter, and like the juice of Jimmy Hendricks, water is needed to make the container for each individual ingredient.
  3. Water can be in a gaseous state, liquid state, or solid state, so the world’s total water has not changed over many years. Even though 10% of water is used by humans, the rest flows into large bodies of water, evaporates into air and falls again as part of the water cycle. Therefore, while water might be in different forms, the  world’s total water has not changed.
  4. Oceans, glaciers, water vapor, rivers.
  5. If you were stuck in the middle of the ocean, you would be surrounded by water; however, the water would be salt water and would not be drinkable.
  6. 77% of water is used in irrigation and agriculture in the west.
  7. a. glaciers and ice caps: 2.11% b. lakes: 0.009%
  8. If a dinosaur drank water, due to the water cycle, the water would eventually evaporate. Therefore, while a dinosaur might drink a molecule of water, the cycle causes the water to turn into different forms which would make it possible for me to drink that water.
  9. 370 L of water most likely is the direct water used, while 4,960 L of water is probably the direct and indirect water used.

Page 17:
  1. a. east-steam/electric b. south-steam/electric c. midwest-steam/electric d. west-irrigation/agriculture e. alaska-mining f. hawaii-irrigation/agriculture
  2. The most mostly contains farms, so water is used greatly for irrigation and agriculture; yet, the east mostly contains factories, so the water is used for steam and electric, not irrigation and agriculture.
  3. Weather greatly affects water use within all six regions. The east gets very cold, so the use of heaters if frequent which is why water is mostly used for steam and electric. The midwest and south gets very hot and cold as well, therefore air conditioning and heaters are used which proves the water usage is mainly for steam and electric. Alaska is very cold, so water is used for mining. In the west and Hawaii, rain is frequent, so water is mostly used for irrigation and agriculture in order for crops to be produced.
